joint venture of Envision Financial and First Calgary Credit Unions. As an IT Executive and
management consultant he has worked throughout the US, Central America, and the UK.David was born in Belize and moved to Canada at the age of 10. It was 100 degrees in Belize when he left and 40 below in Calgary when he arrived -- in the middle of a blizzard. One of the first things he learned in Canada was that underneath that soft fluffy snow is hard cold slippery ice which, if one is not very careful could result in a fall and break 10 year old limbs. David graduated high school in Suva, Fiji, took a year to travel Europe and Northern Africa and returned to Canada to study Economics at University of Calgary. In 1999, David was appointed Honorary Consul General for Belize by the Prime Minister. David volunteers as a Big Brother and he and his little Brother (who is also named David) are avid golfers, bike riders, and "guy" movie goers. David put himself through university by playing the saxophone in a jazz quartet and married his favourite groupie and they had a daughter. He is looking forward to helping the Surrey Hospice Society continue to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community. |

Nita Hollick, Director
Nita spent her childhood in the Rocky Mountains of Kimberley where she indulged her passion for
riding horses. It was in Grade 10 when Nita met her future husband, Gary. Shortly after the sale of The Haggle House, Nita and Gary took over a restaurant and a convenience store – which became a family affair, involving parents, brothers, and sisters. Following the birth of their sons in 1987 and 1989, along with the closing of the Cominco mine in 1990, the couple turned their business ventures towards Calgary. Life in Calgary was an exciting time, as Nita started a day care and was able to stay home and raise the children. Five years passed and the family packed up their home to move to Vancouver. Since 1995 Nita has spent most of her career in the sales and service industry and, along with husband Gary, has been a strong advocate of the benefits in Rotary. In 2004/05, she served as First Lady for Rotary District 5050. Nita has held a lifelong mission to remove and overcome obstacles, with laughter always prevalent. Marion Brandner, Executive Director
Marion joined the Surrey Hospice Society on January 9th, 2006 following
3 years as Executive Director for the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce, and before that 3 years as
Director of Business Development with the Burnaby Board of Trade.Marion brings with her extensive community and business contacts as well as event planning and business development expertise to help expand the Surrey Hospice Society. “It’s all about building relationships and trust. I would far rather do business or get involved with a person or an organization I know and trust before going out and looking for new ones. That takes time – it doesn’t happen overnight.” Marion completed the volunteer training program (13 sessions) and has a much clearer understanding of what our work is all about. “I have a whole new appreciation for our 120+ volunteers, and the amazing work they do. This is a very carefully planned and prepared training program and resource. Most volunteer trainees find they have ‘issues’ to deal with and work through before they can move on to helping others. It definitely is for the individual who is selfless, compassionate and bestows a loving, neutral presence. They are truly ‘Companions for the Journey’ whether it be with someone with a life threatening illness in the Palliative Care unit, or the Hospice Residence, or with a bereaved family member trying to cope with a traumatic loss. Profound and sacred events happen every day in this work. It’s something we expect yet respond to in wonder and awe. |
