Volunteering

What is a Hospice Volunteer?

A Hospice Volunteer is someone who:

  • Is the foundation of our Society
  • Believes in the philosophy and goals of the Society
  • Gives their energy, time, and skills
  • Is part of an organization where skills are shared and there is
    an opportunity for ongoing learning
  • Provides services that could not be offered were it not for volunteers
  • Respects the right to privacy of patients and their families,
    and the need for confidentiality

Consider being a Client Volunteer

Requires a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week, enrollment in our Hospice Volunteer Education Program, and go through an interview process. The Education Program is a 33-hour program of basic hospice palliative care and bereavement education aimed at preparing individuals to become entry-level volunteers with the Surrey Hospice Society.

This program includes an introduction to the needs of people at the end of life and the needs of people who are bereaved. The focus is on developing volunteers who have a good understanding of their own issues and are skilled at active and compassionate listening.

Advanced Education and Facilitator Training is offered to volunteers who have demonstrated a commitment to the Surrey Hospice Society for at least one year and who are expected to take leadership roles in team and group program situations.

    or child experiencing a loss
  • Facilitating or helping with a bereavement support group for adults,

Consider being a Friend of Hospice

We at Surrey Hospice Society believe that each one of us has a special gift to be used to help others.

We also realize that not everyone has the gift to companion alongside of those who are facing end of life or who are bereaved.

So, if you would like to use your gift in some other way, why not become a “Friend of Hospice”?

We have a number of “fun” ways that you could become involved and at the same time help raise much needed funds.

Do you have a “Passion for Fashion”? Help organize a Fashion Show. Do you like to walk or run? How about helping out with our “Walk of Remembrance?” Did you say you loved to dance to the oldies? What about a sock-hop? Or perhaps you are filled with some wonderful ideas of your own. Why not join a Fund-raising Committee? Already we are gearing up for next year and we need your help.

Other “Friends of Hospice” Opportunities include:

  • Office Support - A regular weekly 4-hour shift in the Hospice
office. Includes answering the telephones, greeting clients,
assisting visitors with the library, and performing general
office duties. Computer skills an asset.
  • Office Maintenance - Regular cleaning of bathrooms, floors,
    and kitchen.
  • Bingo - A shift of 4 hours once a month at Newton Bingo Hall.
  • Celebrate a Life - This event is held annually in December at
    Guildford mall.

Additional training will be provided when necessary. If you are interesting in becoming a Surrey Hospice Society volunteer, contact us: Telephone 604-543-7006 or email at admin@surreyhospice.com
