VOLUNTEER

Our selfless volunteers are the foundation of the Surrey Hospice Society. Interested in joining our team? We have many opportunities for you to make a difference in our community.

WHAT IS A VOLUNTEER?

A volunteer at Surrey Hospice Society is someone who believes in our philosophy and goals. They lend some of their energy, time, and skills to provide support for others who need it. Their skills are shared and they are provided with opportunities for ongoing learning.

HOW TO APPLY

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! Come into our office to pick up an application form, or download and complete the form below and send it to us by mail, email, or fax.

Volunteer Opportunities

We have lots of positions that suit many different skills. Join our team of office volunteers, client volunteers, Friends of Hospice, and thrift store volunteers.

Office Volunteer

Our office volunteers work closely with the office administrator. They ensure that things run smoothly at the office by answering the phone, greeting clients, assisting visitors with the library and performing general office duties. They may also occasionally assist with events and projects. A commitment of 4 hours a week is appreciated. Computer skills are an asset.

We also work in conjunction with WCG's (Where Careers Grow) Job Options BC Urban Older Worker’s Program, offering their clients an opportunity to volunteer & gain work experience in our office while they are looking for job placement.

Client Volunteer

Our client volunteers work with individuals and their friends and families at the Surrey Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit and at Laurel Place. They facilitate and help with bereavement support groups for adults, adolescents, and children. This position requires a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week, enrollment in our Hospice Volunteer Education Program, and an interview process.

The Hospice Volunteer Education Program is a 33-hour program of basic hospice palliative care and bereavement education aimed at preparing individuals to become entry-level palliative client volunteers with the Surrey Hospice Society.

This program includes an introduction to the needs of people at the end of life and the needs of people who are bereaved. The focus is on developing volunteers who have a good understanding of their own issues and are skilled at active and compassionate listening.

Friend of Hospice

A Friend of Hospice helps out at our special events and fundraisers throughout the year. Organizing our events take time and effort, but it is made much easier with our Friends of Hospice on our team. Volunteers will be on an "on call" basis when we have events that require additional help. This option is perfect for those who cannot devote time on a regular basis, but would still like to help out.

Thrift Store Volunteer

The Community Thrift Store, a joint project of the Surrey Hospice Society and the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society, is home to many volunteers. Volunteers at our thrift store are always having a blast. There are different things to do at our thrift store: work the cash register, organize and maintain the sales floor, sort through donations, and test out electronics. For more information, visit their website!

Tool Store Volunteer

Got a passion for DIY projects? The Toolbox Store is a new store from the Surrey Hospice Society. Volunteers are always needed to help out with the register, the sales floor, and receiving donations. Stay tuned for more information.

Our services would not be offered if it weren't for our volunteers. Be a volunteer and make a difference in your community today!
